Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a fitness system devised in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. He designed a series of more than 500 mind-body movements or exercises to develop strong, flexible muscles without adding bulk. Today followers include dancers, athletes, physical therapists, health care professionals and those interested in health and fitness.

STOTT PILATES®is a contemporary approach to the original works of Joseph H. Pilates. It is an anatomically based , evolved and updated version of Pilates that enhances the original technique using current knowledge about the body mechanics and athletic performance enhancement pioneered by co-founders Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals.

STOTT PILATES®focuses on core stability, neutral alignment and breathing, at the same time helping to restore the natural curves of the spine and relieving tension.

I have been studying STOTT PILATES® since 2011. This followed the diagnosis of a degenerative spinal condition that led to surgery in 2012. I used Pilates both before and after the spinal surgery to strengthen my abdominal muscles and to increase the mobility around my joints. Having experienced the benefits of Pilates first hand, in particular the STOTT PILATES® method, I decided to train as a Pilates Instructor in early 2014.
